1st LD Writethru: 10 killed in road accident in NE India

Xinhua, March 27, 2017 Adjust font size:

At least 10 people were killed and more than 30 others injured in a road accident in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur Monday, a senior police official said.

"The mishap happened when a bus in which the victims were travelling fell into a stream in Senapati district near state capital Imphal this morning," he said, on condition of anonymity.

While 10 people died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a nearby state-wun hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious, the official said.

Eye-witnesses told police that the accident occurred as the bus driver lost control of the speeding vehicle on Imphal-Dimapur National Highway while negotiating a curve.

However, a probe has been ordered into the incident, the official added.

Road accidents are common in India. More than 130,000 people die in road accidents in India every year, according to official statistics. Enditem
