Women’s Day Celebrated to Boost China-Africa Cultural Exchanges

2017 International Women’s Day was celebrated with an event at Minzu University of China On March 12. Sponsored by BEIJING REVIEW and Minzu University of China, and organized by ChinAfrica magazine, the occasion was held with a number of distinguished guests from present to enjoy the festivities.

Among the guests were Zhang Jingze, Full-Time Member of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission of China and Secretary of the CPC Committee of Minzu University of China, Jiang Jie, Counselor of the Department of African Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, African women ambassadors, wives of ambassadors, diplomats and wives of diplomats.

The day was filled with continuous recognition of the important role women play in today’s society, including speeches from Dolana Msimang, Ambassador of South Africa to China, Feng Lan, Director General of the International Cooperation Department of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, Li Yafang, President of BEIJING REVIEW and Song Min, Vice President of Minzu University of China.

In her speech, South African Ambassador to China Dolana Msimang noted that Chinese and African cultures are so different, yet very similar and it is this which ignites people’s curiosity and make people interested to know more about one another. It makes us reach out to each other across oceans and barriers.

“It is important to embrace the theme of this event which is about integration and culture. It is about synergy of diverse cultures. It is about us getting together, to celebrate all that is beautiful and wonderful about China and Africa. I hope we will be able to share our unique characteristics and knowledge defined by everything from language, cuisine, social habits, music and arts,” she said.

Feng Lan, Director General of the International Cooperation Department of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, said China is a harmonious big family with cultural diversity. “Today, I am deeply touched by affectionate friendship between China and Africa meeting with sisters from Africa countries,” she said.
