Main opposition leader announces extension of truce in Mozambique

Xinhua, March 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

Mozambican main opposition party Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama announced on Friday that the truce between government forces and his armed men is extended for 60 more days to allow Mozambican people to continue with their daily activities normally.

Dhlakama declared the extension of the truce in a conference call. He said the extension is to reduce the number of victims and allow the negotiations to be held in an appropriate environment.

"We still have political problems (to solve), but if people can sleep well in their houses, travel freely without fearing bullets, I strongly believe that this is the kind of peace the country deserves," said Dhlakama.

This is the second time the truce between the government and the main opposition is extended but Dhlakama affirms that the goal is to sign a long-lasting peace agreement.

"What we really want is definitive peace, the true peace, where Mozambicans will feel freedom to circulate, where there is human and economic development in the country," added Dhlakama.

Dhlakama said the interaction between Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and him is registering progress.

"I confirm that we have done a tremendous work since last December and we have managed, me and my brother Filipe Nyusi. It was not an easy work, there were tough negotiations but it was possible for us to negotiate and find alternatives, " said Dhlakama.

The Parliament of Mozambique is expected to play an important role in this process such as to debate upon the decentralization documents that will be submitted this semester for appreciation. Endit
