Eurozone retail trade down by 0.1 pct in January

Xinhua, March 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

The seasonally-adjusted volume of retail trade fell by 0.1 percent month-on-month across the 19-country eurozone while it rose by 0.1 percent in the wider European Union (EU) in January, official data showed Friday.

On a yearly basis, the calendar adjusted retail sales index increased by 1.2 percent in the single currency bloc and by 1.5 percent in the 28-country EU in the first month of 2017, said Eurostat, the EU's statistics agency.

The decrease in the euro area in January 2017 is due to falls of 0.2 percent for non-food products and of 0.1 percent for "Food, drinks and tobacco", while automotive fuel rose by 0.8 percent.

In the EU, the 0.1 percent increase is due to a rise of 0.7 percent for automotive fuel, while "Food, drinks and tobacco" and non-food products both remain stable.

Among the EU member states, Finland recorded the highest monthly increase in total retail trade volume, 4.4 percent, while Germany and France saw the largest decreases, both minus 0.8 percent. Enditem
