ri Lanka, on Friday said it had launched a probe into the sudden death of sea turtles who were found washed ashore on the southern coastline between Tangalle and Hambantota recently.
Fisheries Ministry officials said that they were unaware of the exact cause of death but they suspected that the turtles may have been caught in fishing nets or traps.
The ministry has instructed the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) to conduct the probe and submit a report.
Sri Lanka plays a large role in conserving sea turtles as it is home to five of the seven species of marine turtles in the world.
Out of these five, two are currently critically endangered. Endit
