1st LD Writethru: Afghan gov't forces recapture key district in northern province

The government troops recaptured Tala-o-Barfak district in the northern Baghlan province on Friday after fierce fighting, a police official in the district said.

"We recaptured Tala-o-Barfak district today and Taliban rebels have run away," Mohammad Hussain told Xinhua.

Taliban militants in a surprise move overrun the strategically important Tala-o-Barfak district on Wednesday.

Although the government officials have declined to comment on the situation in Tala-o-Barfak district, locals, media outlets and Taliban reported the fall of the mountainous district to the Taliban militants on Wednesday.

Hussian, who is fighting the Taliban insurgents in Tala-o-Barfak district, has claimed that the militants were in the run and the security forces had been chasing them.

Taliban, which is in control of parts of the northern Baghlan province, has yet to make comment on the situation in Tala-o-Barfak district. Endit
