Eight Iraqis sentenced over rape of German woman in Vienna

Xinhua, March 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

Eight Iraqi nationals Thursday were given jail sentences over the rape of a 28-year-old German woman in Vienna during New Year's Eve celebrations in 2015, local media reported.

Four of the men allegedly escorted the heavily drunk woman who had become separated from a friend to an apartment, where they were joined by five others in repeatedly raping her.

A prosecutor said the victim was in an "unconscious, terrified state," and unable to defend herself.

And it was said that the woman now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

The judge of the regional court dismissed the counterarguments of the accused, including that the sexual contact was at the initiative of the woman.

One of the men who claimed he was sleeping during the rapes was however acquitted due to a lack of evidence. The remainder were given prison sentences ranging from nine to 13 years. Enditem
