Austrian official calls for departure centres for rejected asylum seekers

Xinhua, March 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

Austrian Minister of the Interior Wolfgang Sobotka Thursday called for the establishment of departure centres for rejected asylum seekers, according to an Austria Press Agency report.

In his comments made at the National Assembly, he said persons accommodated at these centers are to have restrictions on their sphere of travel, and in cases of refusal to depart the country, could even be held there.

He said the primary goal of such centers would be to expedite voluntary return to countries of origin.

In this context he also made note of the planned implementation of heavier monetary fines for persons who do not leave the country despite a proper review of their application. Endit
