Austrian parliament approves probe committee for Eurofighter case

Xinhua, March 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

Austrian parliament Thursday came to agreement on the establishment of a parliamentary investigation committee into the ongoing Eurofighter case, Austria Press Agency reported.

The right-wing Freedom Party, which had initially called for more evidence of wrongdoing on the part of Airbus in its sale of the interceptor jets, finally gave its approval to the Greens Party, that had been the driving force in the push for a new investigation after protracted negotiations.

It is to be the second such investigation into the case, after the first having taken place in 2006, also to uncover alleged inconsistencies.

The two parties of the ruling coalition, the Social Democrats and the People's Party, have already given their backing for the parliamentary investigation committee to move forward, also having been behind a criminal complaint made in February that seeks to recover up to 1.1 billion euros (1.15 billion U.S. dollars) in damages.

It was reported that further details on the investigation and a timetable of further proceedings are to be revealed at a press conference on Friday. Endit
