The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Thursday.
-- First Quantum Minerals, the owners of Kansanshi Mining Plc situated in northwestern Zambia's Solwezi town, has recorded its highest copper production of 540,000 tonnes. (Times of Zambia)
-- France's Minister of Development and Francophone Jean-Marie Le Guen is expected in Zambia on a two-day visit dedicated to development and diplomacy between the two countries.
The French minister is expected to arrive in Zambia on Thursday, March 2, and will hold meetings with various Zambian officials, including Vice-President Inonge Wina and Finance Minister Felix Mutati. (Zambia Daily Mail)
-- Stakeholders have urged the Zambian government to immediately allow the export of up to 320,000 tonnes of maize and maize meal to avoid a major storage crisis.
The stakeholders, who recently held a meeting, warned that a storage crisis was looming in the maize industry caused by unfavorable maize marketing conditions, adding that the country will have a carryover maize stock when the new crop is harvest, according to a communique issued. (Daily Nation)
-- Zambia's revenue agency has delayed plans to demand Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TPINs) on all bank account holders after concerns by commercial banks that the move will force people to stop banking the money.
The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) said it has shelved the implementation of the plan until the end of this year to allow for wide consultations with all stakeholders.
The revenue agency had planned to, effective January 1 this year, make it mandatory for financial institutions to require all bank count holders to obtain a TPIN number. (The Mast).
