EU funds offer 41 mln USD for roads in south Poland

Poland's southern city of Tychy will receive 167 million zlotys (41 million U.S. dollars) in EU funds for the construction of an interchange under an agreement signed on Tuesday, according to Polish Press Agency.

The total investment will reach 207.5 million zlotys. It will involve a redevelopment of Polish national road 44 in Tychy and the construction of an interchange.It is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

Co-financed by the EU's Infrastructure and Environment 2014-20 programme, the project is to offer fast access to the S1 expressway, and indirectly to the nearby Pyrzowice airport.

The aim of the investment is to alleviate traffic problems in the city and improve the quality of the environment.

The deal is the tenth of its kind signed in February while several more contracts are still on this week's agenda, according to Polish Deputy Development Minister Witold Slowik.

All the contracts under the EU programme that will have been signed by the end of this week are expected to receive a total funding of 1 billion zlotys, according to Slowik. The maximum EU subsidy level is 85 percent of the eligible costs. (1 U.S. dollar = 4.07 Polish zloties) Endit
