Controversial anti-smog campaign sparks debate in Poland

Xinhua, February 28, 2017 Adjust font size:

A shop offering cigarettes for children, which appeared a few days ago in the streets of Warsaw, caused a stir nationwide and was made part of an anti-smog campaign, local media reported Monday.

A shop-window advertising "cigarettes for children" sparked comments and debate around the country recently. On Monday, "Miasto Jest Nasze" (The City is Ours) organization informed that the controversial advertisement was a part of information campaign.

The campaign was aimed at increasing people's awareness regarding the poor quality of air in Warsaw and the fact that smog constitutes a major health threat also for youngsters. Benzoapyrene, a major component of smog, is a dangerous carcinogenic substance.

According to the association's data, due to the smog every child in Warsaw inhales an equivalent of a box of cigarettes each week. "Smog is a cigarette for children. Free and fully legal," the agency said.

The "cigarettes for children" action kicks off a two-week information campaign, including debates and meetings with experts. A smog information center will be open to public between Feb. 27 and March 12.

"Miasto Jest Nasze" is an association of over 140 people from Warsaw, working together for the good of the city, not associated with any political party. Endit
