Ukraine starts spring sowing ahead of schedule

Xinhua, February 28, 2017 Adjust font size:

Ukraine kicked off the spring sowing campaign of grains and legumes ahead of the schedule due to the favourable weather conditions, the Agriculture Ministry said on Monday.

The field work haS already started in 10 out of the country's 24 regions, the ministry said in a statement.

This year, Ukraine's grain planting areas are expected to reach 14.4 million hectares, rising by about one percent from the previous year, the statement said.

About 60 percent of the cultivated farmland will be covered with wheat, sunflowers and corn, the main agricultural export products, it said.

Ukraine, which saw the record grain harvest of 66 million tons in 2016, is targeting to export some 41 million tons of crops in the 2016-2017 marketing year. Endit
