The European Investment Bank (EIB) will help major Slovak cities to become more innovative, digitized and ecological, turning them into so-called "smart cities", EIB vice president Vazil Hudak said on Thursday.
"Bratislava, Nitra, Kosice and Presov will get contributions between 150 and 200 million euros (157 and 210 million U.S. dollars) for projects to become smarter cities," he said.
Hudak noted that the first steps of this concept would be taken by the end of this year. Meanwhile, the two largest cities in Slovakia have already launched their first Smart City measures.
Bratislava has recently set up a Smart bench on which people can charge their phone or connect to the internet, while Kosice has prepared an app for tourists that enables them to download information about cultural events in the city.
Smart Cities are cities of the future that are fully ecological, and at the same time, provide citizens with digital technologies and internet access.
These are used in everyday life -- in transport, housing, the energy sector, education, health care, services, and waste management. Endit
