Macedonia launches awareness campaign against discrimination

Xinhua, February 23, 2017 Adjust font size:

Macedonia launched an awareness-raising campaign on Wednesday against forms of discrimination, including sexual orientation and gender identity, local media reported.

The campaign, supported by the Dutch embassy to Skopje, was launched by the Health Education and Research Association (HERA) and the Coalition of Sexual and Health Rights of Marginalized Communities, media said.

The HERA program director Drasko Kostovski told reporters that local anti-discrimination coordination bodies had been set up to encourage people to report cases of discrimination.

According to Kostovski, discrimination and harassment can be reported when it concerns gender discrimination in the workplace, social status, and harassment due to one's sexual orientation and gender identity.

Macedonia approved the law on protection against discrimination seven years ago but the number of citizen complaints related to discrimination had been insignificant.

Macedonian law on protection against discrimination does not include sexual orientation and gender identity, although amendments have been proposed for their inclusion in the text. Endit
