The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Wednesday.

--Zambian President Edgar Lungu has warned of severe consequences against people who have refused to accept him as winner of last year's elections.

Lungu, who has not been recognized as winner of the August 11, 2016 elections by the country's leading opposition party, said the consequences of not recognizing him as president may be too bad, especially for people who were playing games. (Times of Zambia)

--Zambia and Russia have signed an intergovernmental agreement to jointly build a nuclear science research center in the southern African nation.

The agreement was signed by chief executive officer of Russia's Rosatom State Corporation Alexey Likhachev and Permanent Secretary in Zambia's Ministry of National Development and Planning Simon Miti.

The signing of the agreement signals the start of a new task to create a nuclear industry in Zambia, according to a joint statement. (Zambia Daily Mail)

--The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has requested for 20,000 tons of maize from Zambia to cushion its maize deficit, a senior Zambian government official has said.

Minister of Agriculture Dora Siliya said her ministry is currently considering the request although she pointed out that the DRC wanted to purchase the maize from the private sector. (Daily Nation)

--The head of Zambia's soccer governing body has urged the country's representative in the 2017 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League Championship to raise the standard set by last year's representatives who reached the semifinals of the competition.

Andrew Kamanga, who congratulated Zanaco for progressing to the first round of the competition after defeating Rwanda's APR, said the team has what it takes to go far in the competition. (The Mast) Endit
