China takes two short track speed skating golds at Asiad

Xinhua, February 21, 2017 Adjust font size:

China wrapped up two short track speed skating golds as Zang Yize won the women's 500m and Wu Dajing won the men's 500m at the 2017 Sapporo Asian Winter Games here on Tuesday.

The 17-year old Zang clocked in 43.911 seconds to take the title in a dramatic race with China's Fan Kexin and Shim Suk Hee of South Korea both being disqualified after getting tangled up in the final lap.

"I think she (Fan) was too eager to win the race, and anything could happen in the short track speed race," said Zang, who just won the gold at the Winter Universiade earlier this month in Almaty.

"I am happy to win the gold as this is the first time I competed in Asian Winter Games. I will train harder after this Asiad," added Zang, who already set her eyes on the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

Ito Ayuko of Japan snatched the silver in 44.236, while the bronze went to the Final B winner Choi Minjeong of South Korea who timed 44.819 as there was no third place finisher in the Final A.

Wu, a silver medalist in Sochi 2014, timed 40.764 to take the men's 500m title, beating Seo Yira of South Korea to the second place in 40.842.

"The race was not easy. South Koreans gave us some pressure in the last two laps, I almost lost my belance in the final lap," said Wu, who won the 2014 World Championships in Montreal, Canada.

Park Seyeong of South Korea grabbed the bronze in 41.182 and China's Han Tianyu settled for the fourth place in 41.196.

Later on, Japan, South Korea, China and Kazakhstan booked their place in the final of the women's 3,000m relay, while China, South Korea, Japan and Malaysia entered into the final of the men's 5,000m relay to take place on Wednesday. Enditem
