Xinhua, February 18, 2017 Adjust font size:

China and South Korea each scored a 20-0 victory on Saturday, the opening day for the women's ice hockey event at Sapporo Asian Winter Games.

The women's ice hockey team Hong Kong, China made the AWG debut on Saturday, but China was just too strong for the team which is made up of amateurs.

China made 78 shots on goal, and Hong Kong, China finished with three.

"Our team is good enough, and now we must develop our consistency," said China's head coach Richard Edward Seeley.

South Korea eased past Thailand 20-0. The Asian powerhouse finished the first quarter 7-0, and Thailand only attempted one shot within the goal area.

The host team Japan met Kazakhstan and won 6-0. It wasn't an easy win though, but Japan made strong defense by limiting the opponent's shooting attempts to three.

"We played pretty good hockey today," said Japan head coach Yamanaka Takeshi. "The team's effort on the defensive side is impressive, and it would be better if we made more goals."

China will take on Kazakhstan and Japan will face South Korea in the next round. Endit
