Poll shows overwhelming public support for Baltic rail project in Latvia

Xinhua, February 17, 2017 Adjust font size:

An overwhelming majority of people in Latvia, about 89 percent, back Rail Baltica European-gauge railroad project, a new poll showed Thursday.

The survey gauges local residents' attitudes to the ambitious pan-Baltic project intended to reconnect Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia with western Europe.

Meanwhile, 4 percent of the surveyed people in Latvia strongly disapprove of the railroad project.

The poll also reveals that public awareness of the railroad project has increased in recent years, from 87 percent of respondents being informed about the project last year to 95 percent this year.

Berg Research conducted the online poll in December 2016 and January 2017, interviewing 1,009 residents of Latvia aged 18 to 65.

Rail Baltica is expected to facilitate regional integration by means of a railway link from Helsinki to Tallinn, Riga, Kaunas, Warsaw and Berlin and might potentially be extended to Venice. Enditem
