Over 2,200 people killed in Zambia road accidents last year: police

Zambia recorded a total of 32,350 road traffic accidents last year in which 2,206 people lost their lives, the police said on Thursday.
However, the number of road traffic accidents is a slight decline when compared to 2015 when the country recorded 33,664 accidents, according to police spokesperson Esther Katongo.
The police spokesperson however added that the number of fatalities last year increased from the previous year with the country recording 2,113 fatalities.
Lusaka, the country's capital, recorded the highest number of road traffic accidents at 17,317 in which 452 people died while the Copperbelt Province had 5,561 accidents with 280 fatalities.
The northern part of the country recorded the lowest number of accidents at 542 with 76 fatalities, she added.
The road traffic accidents also left 3,262 people with serious injuries and 5,683 with slight injuries.
The police spokesperson attributed most of the accidents to excessive speeding at 14.7 percent, misjudging clearance distance at 14.6 percent, failing to keep to the near side at 12.8 percent and cutting in at 10.9 percent. Endit
