Laos to send 60 athletes to 9th ASEAN School Games

Xinhua, February 16, 2017 Adjust font size:

Lao Ministry of Education and Sports will send 60 Lao student athletes to compete at the ninth ASEAN School Games to be hosted by Singapore this July.

The 60 students will be ready to compete in the badminton, sepak takraw, swimming, and track and field events at the Games. The Lao student athletes are looking forward to the opportunity to compete but they mostly consider themselves as only outside medal chances, Phoukham Kongsithalath, an official at the Physical and Arts Education Department of Lao Ministry of Education and Sports was quoted by Lao state-run media Vientiane Times on Thursday.

The best medal chances for Laos at the ASEAN School Games in Singapore will be the sepak takraw and badminton teams, he added.

In 2016, more than 100 sports trainers and students of Laos were able to compete in the futsal, sepak takraw, badminton, table tennis, tennis, golf, basketball, swimming and track and field events at the eighth ASEAN School Games in Thailand.

At the 2016 Games, the Lao teams managed to collect a silver medal from the men's sepak takraw singles event and a bronze medal in the sepak takraw men's doubles. They also collected four bronze medals from the track and field events, a bronze medal in the tennis event and a bronze medal from the badminton events.

The ninth ASEAN School Games is scheduled to be held on July 13-21. Endit
