Ligue 1 leaders Monaco confirm bid for Belgium's club Cercle Brugge KSV

Xinhua, February 16, 2017 Adjust font size:

AS Monaco FC, currently leading the Ligue 1 standings, confirmed its offer (subject to certain conditions) to purchase a majority stake in the Belgium's Ligue 1B club Cercle Brugge KSV on Wednesday.

"On Wednesday 15 February 2017, AS Monaco FC confirms that it has made an offer (subject to certain conditions) to purchase a majority stake in the club Cercle Brugge KSV, who play in Belgium's Ligue 1B," said the club in a statement on its official website.

The Belgium's club will take a decision by the end of February after a general meeting of their shareholders examine the proposal.

Seen as part of AS Monaco's development strategy focused on young talents, the project would benefit the club in terms of expertise from the "Belgian school", while respecting the traditions and values of Cercle Brugge, who was an historic club in Belgian football.

The project will eventually provide an additional stage in the development of young players from the AS Monaco Academy, between the reserve team and the first team, with promotion to the Belgian first division as its primary objective, according to the Monaco club's statement. Endit
