13 militants detained in eastern Afghan town

Xinhua, February 16, 2017 Adjust font size:

A total of 13 militants were detained during special operations in eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, the command of Afghan Special Forces said on Thursday.

"Afghan Special Operation Forces launched cordon and search operations across Jalalabad city on specific intelligence inputs over the past 24 hours, capturing 13 terrorists," it said in a statement.

Among the arrestees were three militants of Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, the statement added.

Jalalabad city, some 120 km east of national capital of Kabul, is capital of eastern Nangarhar province.

The arrest of the captured militants would further improve the public security in the eastern provinces, the statement said, adding, "Afghan Special Operation Forces spare no effort to provide security for the country."

The Afghan security forces have beefed up security operations recently as militants were attempting to take territory and consolidate their positions during the winter in the mountainous country. Enditem
