Irish President Michael Higgins arrived on Wednesday in Cuba on an official visit, during which he will hold talks with his counterpart Raul Castro.

Higgins was welcomed at the Jose Marti International Airport in Havana by Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra.

The Irish leader traveled to the island accompanied by a delegation of government officials as part of a Latin American tour that began in Peru and Colombia.

During his stay in Cuba, Higgins will pay homage to Cuban national hero Jose Marti on Wednesday and will be officially received by President Castro in the Palace of the Revolution.

He is scheduled to attend the XXVI International Book Fair on Thursday, held in Havana's colonial fortress of San Carlos de La Cabaña.

On Friday, Higgins will give a lecture at the College of Saint Geronimo, in the historic center of the capital, before leaving on Saturday. Enditem
