Indonesia held its gubernatorial election on Wednesday to pick up governors, heads of districts and mayors with the strongest competition happening in the country's capital city of Jakarta.

It was the second simultaneous direct election since 2004 in the country.

Over 41 million eligible voters went to polling stations across the country to elect a total of 337 pairs of candidates who had offered various measures to boost development in their territory during campaign.

In Jakarta, the contest involves incumbent Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, who is supported by the country's largest political party Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, the oldest son of former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who leads the Indonesian Democratic Party.

Another candidate is former Education Minister Anies Baswedan who is backed by the third biggest Great Indonesia Movement Party or Gerindra. Endit
