Natural disasters leave more than 43,000 homeless in Peru

Natural disasters happening over the last winter in Peru left at least 43,730 people homeless and affected 353,000 others, the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) of Peru announced on Tuesday.

According to the official report, river overflows, floods, avalanches and landslides throughout the winter months killed 26 people, leaving 43 others wounded and seven missing.

In terms of property damage, these natural disasters also destroyed 4,574 houses, left 5,708 more beyond repair and damaged 77,599 buildings across the country.

Institutions were also damaged, with nine schools and four hospitals destroyed, while 376 more schools and 32 hospitals were knocked out of commission.

Peruvian authorities have declared a state of emergency in the worst-hit areas in order to speed up the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected, clear rubble and re-open up access routes. Endi
