Estonia to open national emergency hotline for better response

Xinhua, February 14, 2017 Adjust font size:

Estonian authorities are working on a national emergency hotline, which will enable people to call in the cases of major disasters or emergency situations, Baltic News Service reported.

"A workgroup of experts has worked out a project for a national emergency hotline and the government's crisis committee has approved the creation of the emergency information hotline on the basis of the Alarm Center," the center's head Janek Laev said last weekend.

Estonian Interior Minister Andres Anvelt informed that residents would be able to call the emergency number in case of natural disasters like major flooding or a large-scale accident like the tragic sinking of the Estonian cruise ferry Estonia back in 1994, which became one of the worst maritime disasters of last century.

"Luckily, nothing of that scale has happened in recent years," the Estonian interior minister said.

The national hotline would be able to answer hundreds of calls coming in during an emergency and provide the callers with the necessary information quickly, Laev indicated. Endit
