Unknown armed men shot dead a counter-terrorism officer and one of his bodyguards in northern Afghanistan's Badakhshan province on Saturday, said Ahmad Nawed Frotan, spokesman for the provincial government.

"Mohammad Adil, the officer of Counter-Terrorism with Badakhshan police, was on routine patrol around Faizabad city today morning when unknown armed men opened fire killing him along with one of his bodyguards and made their escape," Frotan told Xinhua.

No group or individuals have claimed of responsibility for the deadly attack. However, Frotan said investigations have been initiated into the case.

Badakhshan province, with Faizabad as its capital, has been the scene of Taliban-led insurgency over the past a few years. Enditem
