UN congratulates new president of Somalia

The UN Mission in Somalia and other international partners have issued a statement welcoming the conclusion of presidential elections in Somalia, and congratulating the Horn of Africa country's new President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo on his victory, a UN spokesman said here Thursday.

The statement noted that President Farmajo will face formidable challenges going forward, particularly with regard to the country's worsening drought crisis and the possibility of famine, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said, adding that security is another area of key concern.

Farmajo, the former prime minister in Somalia's transitional federal government between 2009 and 2010, was elected the new president of Somalia on Wednesday.

"The international community is eager to partner with the new president, the Federal Government of Somalia, the country's federal member states and the people of Somalia in responding to these challenges," said Michael Keating, the UN special representative for Somalia.

"Yesterday's orderly and peaceful transfer of power is a major achievement for Somalia and should boost confidence in the country's future both at home and abroad," he said. Endit
