7 out of 10 Greeks want stay in eurozone: survey

The majority of Greeks (71.4 percent) wants Greece to stay in the eurozone, with only 22.4 percent choosing the return to drachma, according to a survey published on Wednesday by the local news portal iefimerida (The Newspaper).

The survey was conducted as the second review of Greece's third bailout program drags on, refueling scenarios of a potential "Grexit."

If the review isn't concluded soon, 47.6 percent of respondents in the survey conducted by Rass polling firm supported the idea of holding snap elections, while 25.7 percent suggested a referendum.

Only 12.3 percent of the 1,504 voters nationwide who participated in the survey said they would prefer Athens' agreement to a new round of painful austerity measures in order to conclude the review.

Should national elections be held next weekend, the conservative main opposition New Democracy party is forecast to win with 28.6 percent of the vote, according to pollsters, while the ruling radical left SYRIZA ranking second at 16.8 percent.

The socialists of the Democratic Alliance would follow with 8.1 percent and the far-right Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avghi) would receive 7.8 percent of the vote.

The Communist party KKE and the Union of the Centrists would garner 7.3 and 3 percent respectively. Endit
