At least 458 people were killed in 7,341 road accidents across Zambia in the fourth quarter of 2016, the police said on Saturday.

The fatalities by traffic accidents in the quarter represented an increase when compared to the same period in 2015 where 444 people were killed, police spokesperson Esther Katongo said.

She said 1,479 people were left with serious injuries due to the road traffic accidents, an increase of 447 when compared to the previous year.

Lusaka, the country's capital topped the list with 3,984 accidents and 22 fatalities followed by the Copperbelt Province with 1,047 accidents and 61 fatalities while Luapula Province recorded the lowest number of accidents at 160 with 16 fatalities.

Zambia has 10 provinces.

The main causes of road accidents in 2016 were listed as human error as a result of excessive speed, misjudging clearance distance, failing to keep to the near side and cutting in, she added in a statement. Endit
