Serbian FM warns of repeated migrant crisis

Xinhua, February 4, 2017 Adjust font size:

Serbia is in danger of becoming a victim of Europe's lack of unified policy over migrant issue, Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said on Friday.

Dacic made this statement during a press conference with Lubomir Zaoralek, visiting Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic.

Dacic reminded that more than one million refugees have passed across the Serbian territory since the escalation of the crisis.

"Serbia will have a huge problem if the migrant crisis repeats and Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria decide to close their borders," he said.

He implied that the outcome of the negotiations between the European Union and Turkey is uncertain, while Serbia cannot cope with such a large number of migrants.

"We cannot have so many migrants here in Serbia," he said, adding that 8,000 migrants are currently sheltered in Serbia, which already exceeds Serbia's capacities and requires intervention from EU and international organizations.

"The problem is that the EU does not have a unified policy when it comes to the migrant crisis and Serbia is in danger of becoming a victim of unilateral moves of individual countries," Dacic said. Endit
