Over 3,000 teachers in Portugal in unstable working conditions will be given permanent contracts from next year.
The measure was approved on Thursday at a cabinet meeting in Lisbon, with the aim of giving teachers career stability.
Education Minister Tiago Brandao Rodrigues told local media at the end of the meeting that the new measure would address complaints by several associations representing teachers.
The Portuguese government led by Prime Minister Antonio Costa has implemented a number of measures including reintroducing the 35 hour working week for civil servants and adopting measures to fight against precarious working conditions.
Teachers in Portugal suffered from the previous administration's austerity measures which included cuts to the education sector, involving more working hours, more layoffs and reduced compensation and allowances. Endit
