Rains kill 47 people in Mozambique in past 4 months

Mozambique Council for Disasters Management said Thursday in Maputo that rains falling intensively since October last year have killed 47 people and 90,000 others are directly affected.

"From the 47 deaths so far reported, most of the deaths were caused by atmospheric discharges," said Paulo Tomas, spokesperson of the Council.

Due to the seriousness of the problem, atmospheric discharged the national institute for disaster management has already announced a fund at more than 15,000 U.S. dollars to investigate the reasons why significant number of people are hit by the phenomenon at this time of the year and to find possible solutions to minimize it.

The number of houses destroyed by the rains is currently estimated at 24,000 and the disaster management institute is currently evaluating the damages.

More rains are expected to fall throughout the country according to meteorologists and their prediction forced the government for precautions reasons to activate the orange alert.

Some rivers along the country are already at the alert level and the authorities have already started to encourage people to abandon areas along the river and if they are producing in those areas, they should also consider other areas located in highlands. Endit
