Lebanon's president stresses adherence to constitution

Xinhua, February 2, 2017 Adjust font size:

Lebanese President Michel Aoun stressed on Thursday that he will not tolerate any violations of the constitution during his term, asserting that he is keen on respecting Lebanese peoples' rights.

According to a statement by the presidential media department, Aoun said during a meeting with Lebanon's ambassadors, "during my term, I will forbid constitutional violations and ignorance of the Lebanese people's will for change."

"I will use my constitutional powers to preserve the rights, aspirations and hopes of Lebanese people," added the president.

Aoun was recently criticized for a stance he took during a debate on a parliamentary elections' law.

He said that if given the choice between extending the parliament's term or a vacuum, he would choose a vacuum.

Parliamentary elections are scheduled on May 2017 despite the fact that Lebanese factions are still debating the adoption of a new electoral law following an overwhelming refusal of the current law, introduced in 1960 then amended in Qatar's capital Doha in 2008. Endit
