Zambia sees increasing gender-based violence in 2016

Zambia saw an increase in gender-based violence cases in 2016 compared to the previous year, the country's police said Thursday.

Figures released by the Zambia Police Service show that the country recorded 18,540 gender-based violence cases in 2016, a 2.4-percent rise from 18,088 cases in 2015.

Esther Katongo, the police spokesperson, also said Zambia recorded 77 deaths related to gender-based violence last year.

The country also recorded 2,363 cases of defilement during the year, out of which 2,344 were girl victims and 19 were boys. Endit
