European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Monday denounced the attack at a mosque in Canada's Quebec which claimed at least six lives and injured many others.

Mogherini said in a statement that the attack had shown once again that terrorism was a threat for citizens all over the world, no matter what their religion, belief or nationality.

"We express our deepest sympathy and offer our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to the authorities of Canada," she said.

"Like Canada, the EU firmly supports freedom of religion and diversity as a source of strength of our societies, and will keep protecting and promoting it." she added.

At least six people were killed and eight others wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Quebec mosque during evening prayers on Sunday.

According to reports, two suspects were arrested in connection with the attack, which Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described as a "terrorist attack on Muslims." Endit
