Chadian foreign minister elected Chairperson of AU Commission

Xinhua, January 31, 2017 Adjust font size:

The African Union (AU) 28th Summit on Monday elected Chadian Foreign Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat as the new chairperson of the AU Commission to serve a four-year term.

Mahamat came out victorious over four other contestants who have competed for the prestigious post of the pan-African bloc.

The other four competitors were Botswana's foreign minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, Equatorial Guinea's foreign minister Agapito Mba Mokuy, Kenya's foreign minister Amina Mohamed, and Senegal's Bathily Abdoulaye who is the special UN envoy for Central Africa.

The five competitors, for first time in history of the Organization, made a televised pre-election public debate in December 2016 at the AU headquarters in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa.

The Chadian official replaces South African Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who was elected and became the first ever woman chief of the pan-African bloc in 2012. Endit
