Ghanaian president sets up committee for 60th independence anniversary

Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo on Thursday announced a committee to plan Ghana's 60th independence anniversary celebrations later this year.

Ghana, which attained independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, as the first African country south of the Sahara to gain independence, will turn 60 this year.

Akufo-Addo charged members of the committee to advance the sense of unity and oneness among Ghanaians in the celebration of the anniversary.

"The celebration of our 60th anniversary should be modest, it should take into account our financial circumstances but it also should be elegant and appropriate; we should live in a good feeling about ourselves," he said.

During the celebrations, some illustrious Ghanaians will be awarded for their significant contributions to the growth and development of the country.

A comprehensive program for the anniversary that is expected to be year-long will be put out by the 30-member committee. Endit
