NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday that Montenegro is on the right track to become NATO's newest member in the very near future at a press conference.

Welcoming Montenegro's Prime Minister Dusko Markovic at NATO headquarters, Stoltenberg praised Montenegro's contributions to NATO's activities and missions.

Stoltenberg said he's looking forward to taking the cooperation to a new level "when Montenegro becomes a full member of the alliance."

"The ratification process of the Accession Protocol is now in the final stages," he added.

Foreign ministers of NATO member states signed the accession treaty for Montenegro in May last year, marking an important step in Montenegro's path to the alliance.

Stoltenberg also encouraged Markovic to continue to work on necessary reforms, including strengthening the rule of law and fighting corruption and organized crime. Endit
