S. African stocks close in red on Wednesday

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) closed weaker on Wednesday, while diversified and platinum stocks held their gains.

Gold fell 0.92 percent to sell at 1,197.33 U.S. dollars an ounce.

The South Africa rand was trading at R13.26 to the U.S. dollar, R16.66 to the British pound and R14.23 to the euro at 5 p.m. (CAT).

The all share index fell 0.17 percent to 53,250.79 points at the close of session.

Kumba was up 9.57 percent to R191.74 after saying in a trading update that it expected annual profit to rise more than 20 percent. This update spurred other diversified miners, with Exxaro gaining 3.32 percent to R109.05 and Assore gaining 3.34 percent to R281.82.

Impala Platinum gained 3.82 percent to R57.1 and Amplats rallied 3.49 percent to R369.98.

Sibanye led losses in the gold sector, falling 7.76 percent to R28.18.

AngloGold Ashanti lost 3.96 percent to R162.89, Harmony Gold Mining Company fell 4.97 percent to R31.95. Steinhoff lost 2.91 percent to R67.65. Endit
