Foiled terror attack in Vienna has more links: official

Austrian Minister of Interior Affairs Wolfgang Sobotka said on Monday there are connecting links to the involvement of further suspects in the foiled terror attack in the national capital Vienna, Austria Press Agency reported.

Speaking to the media in Innsbruck, the minister said there are still "several" such links in both Austria and Germany, in each of which a suspect has already been taken into custody.

He noted however that as the "analysis of communications" is not conclusive, the leads are not yet able to be followed.

But the minister confirmed that "it is clear that there is a Salafist background" to the case.

While he did not wish to elaborate on the extent of the terror plot thus far uncovered by authorities, he said it appears it was "still in the planning stages" at the time the 17-year-old prime suspect, accused of planning to detonate a bomb, was arrested.

Sobotka said police presence in Vienna has been increased, but noting that police work alone is not enough to tackle radicalization, especially among the young people.

Therefore, deradicalization measures, including a hotline established for this purpose, are needed. Endit
