Ukraine, Lithuania agree to strengthen agricultural cooperation

Xinhua, January 21, 2017 Adjust font size:

Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Taras Kutovyi and his Lithuanian counterpart Bronius Markauskas held talks, pledging to strengthen cooperation in the agricultural sector between their countries, the Ukrainian Agriculture Ministry said on Friday.

Speaking after the negotiations, which were held during the International agriculture summit in Berlin, Kutovyi said Ukraine is interested in expanding cooperation with Lithuania in such areas as food safety and organic production.

For his part, Markauskas said Lithuania stands ready to share its experience with Ukraine in introducing European norms and standards in its farm sector.

Besides, the parties have agreed to further promote their cooperation in the small farming development, veterinary sector, fishing industry and agricultural science.

Ukraine strives to strengthen its agricultural cooperation with the European Union countries and to align its food safety standards with the European norms in an attempt to boost the trade with the 28-member block.

Despite the free trade deal, which came into effect last year, the trade in farm goods between Ukraine and Lithuania in January-November 2016 was down by 9.8 percent year-on-year to 88.6 million U.S. dollars.

Ukraine's exports to Lithuania are led by sunflower oil, food waste, fruits and nuts, while imports are dominated by fish products. Endit
