The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Friday.

-- Zambian President Edgar Lungu said the country will soon launch its Seventh National Development Plan (SNDP) for the 2017-2021 period with the goal of creating a diversified and resilient economy.

The plan places emphasis on investment in the energy, environmental protection, education and health sectors which will be synchronized with the overall development of agriculture, he said. (Zambia Daily Mail)

-- A mining firm in Zambia has rehired some 300 miners who were retrenched two years ago at the height of a slump in the global price of copper.

Mopani Copper Mines (MCM), a joint venture comprising major shareholders as Glencore, First Quantum Minerals Limited and the Zambian government, has started rehiring the miners it had retrenched to cut down operations when the sector faced daunting challenges.

The Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) and the National Union of Miners and Allied Workers have welcomed the development. (Times of Zambia)

-- Zambia's central bank said the amount of money being spent on a government subsidized farmer support program was a clear indication that the country could not sustain the subsidies.

Bank of Zambia Governor Denny Kalyalya has since called for the scrapping of the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP) because it was unsustainable and an obstacle to the country's economic growth. (Daily Nation)

-- Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), a unit of London-listed Vedanta Resources Plc, has partnered with a local firm in Zambia to support the production of heavy fuel oils and diesel.

The mining firm will be the major customer of the various fuels to be produced by Amchile Oils, according to the agreement.
