Carvajal injury blow for Real Madrid

Xinhua, January 19, 2017 Adjust font size:

Real Madrid suffered a double blow on Wednesday night in the King's Cup knockout competition and in club's treatment room.

Not only did Zinedine Zidane's side suffer a surprise 2-1 defeat at home to a talented Celta Vigo, they also lost Spain international defender Dani Carvajal to a hamstring injury which could keep him out of action for around a month.

Carvajal was a surprise omission from the Madrid squad for the Celta game and was replaced by Brazilian defender Danilo, who was booed by a section of the fans in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Tests have confirmed Carvajal has a grade two hamstring tear and will miss the return trip to Vigo in the Cup, a visit in the Liga Santander, league games against Real Sociedad in the Bernabeu and a trip to play Osasuna, as well as the Cup semi-final if Madrid are able to overturn Wednesday's defeat next week.

However, perhaps the biggest worry for Zidane is that the right back will be struggling for fitness when Real Madrid entertain Napoli in the home leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Feb. 15 - a game which could decide whether Madrid's season ends in success or failure. Endit
