Zambia's meteorological body warns of flash floods in 5 provinces
Xinhua, January 19, 2017 Adjust font size:
Zambia is expected to experience heavy rains coupled with flash floods in five of its 10 provinces, the country's meteorological body said on Wednesday.
The Zambia Meteorological Department said Western, Southern, Lusaka, Central and Eastern provinces will experience heavy rains and flash floods in the next five days, starting on Wednesday January 18.
This was due to high temperatures from the south-east of South Africa which would be moving northward, a move that will also push the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) to oscillate between the southern and central parts of Zambia.
"This will increase rainfall activities over Western, Southern, Lusaka, Eastern and Central provinces. On 22nd January, 2017, the high pressure system will withdraw southwards, allowing the ITCZ to oscillate about the southern border of Zambia thereby increasing rainfall activities across the country," it said in a statement.
Some parts of Lusaka, the country's capital, have been flooded following heavy rains experienced in recent days. Endit
