The Netherlands wishes to house European Medicines Agency

Xinhua, January 18, 2017 Adjust font size:

The Dutch government is going to try to get the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to the Netherlands, local media reported on Tuesday.

The London-based EMA will have to move because of Brexit.

Winning the agency would be a major boost for the Dutch health sector, according to Dutch Health Minister Edith Schippers and Foreign minister Bert Koenders in their letter to the parliament.

The EMA supervises medicines, regulates the launch of new drugs and assesses whether medicines may enter the EU market.

It has a workforce of some 900 people, mainly highly-skilled, from all over Europe.

The Dutch government considers the Netherlands well positioned to house the agency because of its good international links, good housing and education and the wide knowledge of English.

A number of EU countries have expressed the same interest including Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Austria, Denmark and Spain. Endit
