UNIFIL under strategic review for better efficiency: UN

Xinhua, January 18, 2017 Adjust font size:

A United Nations delegation said on Tuesday that the strategic review of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is aimed at improving its efficiency.

The delegation, currently visiting Lebanon to conduct the strategic review, mandated by the UN Security Council, said they aimed at coming up with "recommendations that would make it possible to increase the efficiency of UNIFIL."

El Ghassim Wane, assistant secretary-general for peacekeeping operations, said the meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri was an excellent opportunity "to brief him on the purpose of the strategic review and what we intend to do in the coming days."

He also expressed wish to seek the prime minister's views on the issues at hand, on UNIFIL, on the implementation of resolution 1701 and an overall vision and expectations.

He assured that the UN is committed to continuing supporting Lebanon, maintaining the partnership with it, as well as consolidating progress in southern Lebanon and the calm along the Blue Line. Endit
