German economic sentiment improves slightly in Jan.

Xinhua, January 18, 2017 Adjust font size:

German economic sentiment in January 2017 improved slightly compared with that of December 2016, a survey by the ZEW think tank showed on Tuesday.

An indicator of economic sentiment for Germany has improved by 2.8 points to 16.6 points.

"The slight increase of the ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment is mainly due to the improved economic situation across European countries," ZEW President Achim Wambach said in a statement.

"The fairly good preliminary figures recorded for the development of the German GDP last year, as well as for the industrial production of the eurozone in November 2016, came as a surprise to many," Wambach added.

Germany's economic situation has improved significantly with the assessment of the current situation climbing 13.8 points to 77.3 points, the highest level since July 2011.

The ZEW index is based on the results of a monthly survey of some 200 analysts and investors. Endit
