Two prisoners were shot dead Monday by police after they had escaped from a prison in southern Brazil on Sunday, according to local sources.
The government of the state of Parana said that an anonymous tip-off was received by police stating that four suspects were hiding in Quatro Barras, near the state city of Parana.
Police officers attended the scene on Monday morning and a shoot-out began, in which two of the prisoners were killed while the other two managed to escape.
On Sunday morning, 28 prisoners escaped from the Piraquara Penitentiary, near Curitiba, after blowing a hole in a wall with explosives.
The statement from the Parana Secretariat of Public Security and Prison Administration said that no prisoners have yet been recaptured.
This jail break in Parana adds to a difficult year so far for Brazilian prison authorities, since over 130 prisoners have died in gang battles so far in 2017.
The latest such outbreak of violence took place on Saturday when 26 prisoners were killed in Natal, the capital of the northern state of Rio Grande do Norte. Enditem
